Josephson effect in the cuprates: microscopic implications

چکیده

In the tunnel limit, the current-phase relation of Josephson junctions can be expanded as I(φ) = I1 sinφ + I2 sin 2φ. Standard BCS theory predicts that I1RN ∼ ∆/e and I2/I1 ∼ D, where RN is the resistance of the junction in the normal state, ∆ is the superconducting gap, and D ≪ 1 is the junction transparency. In the cuprates, the experimental value of I1RN (I2/I1) is much smaller (larger) than the BCS prediction. We argue that both peculiarities of the cuprates can be explained by postulating quantum fluctuations of the pairing symmetry.

What Does the Josephson Effect Tell Us about the Superconducting State of the Cuprates?

The defining property of a superconductor is the stiffness of its phase. In conventional lowTc superconductors this stiffness is so large that in order to directly observe its finite value one has to create a region where it is locally suppressed, the so-called superconducting weak link. The resulting weak link region gives rise to a variety of Josephson effects (for a review, see [1]), in whic...

An infrared study of the Josephson vortex state in high-Tc cuprates

– We report the results of the c-axis infrared spectroscopy of La2−xSrxCuO4 in high magnetic field oriented parallel to the CuO2 planes. A significant suppression of the superfluid density with magnetic field ρs(H) is observed for both underdoped (x = 0.125) and overdoped (x = 0.17) samples. We show that the existing theoretical models of the Josephson vortex state fail to consistently describe...

Josephson Current For a Graphene Nanoribbon Using a Lattice Model

A tight binding approach based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach has been used to calculate the DC Josephson current for a lattice model for S-GNR-S junctions , for short junctions with respect to superconducting coherence length. We calculate the phase, length, width and chemical potential dependence at the Josephson junction and discuss the similarities and differences with regard to the t...

Signatures of bilayer splitting in the c-axis optical conductivity of double layer cuprates

We report on the infrared studies of the interlayer response for a series of YBa2Cu3Ox high-Tc superconductors with Pr, Ni, and Zn dopants, as well as for the optimally doped crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oz . These experimental results have motivated us to reexamine some of the long-standing issues in the interlayer electrodynamics of cuprates. Among them are the origins of the anomalous resonance sp...

What Does Instrinsic Josephson Coupling Say about the Pairing Symmetry in the Cuprates?

Measurements of the c-axis properties of the cuprate superconductors show anomalous behavior in both normal and superconducting states. In particulaL there is strong evidence that pairs of CuO2 planes in neighboring unit cells act as Josephson junctions below the critical temperature Tr We present a theory based on incoherent transport Mong the c-axis which naturally reproduces the anisotropic ...
